In the sixteenth century, England was plunged into spiritual darkness. While the Reformation raged in Europe, the people of England suffered because of spiritually ignorant and superstitious priests who read the Bible to them in unintelligible Latin.

Captivated by the desire to see this fog dissipated, the English reformer William Tyndale —author, theologian, and genius linguist—lived to give his countrymen the Scriptures in their own language; Thus the farmer in the field could have greater biblical knowledge than the Pope himself. However, such an effort was considered heresy, so Tyndale spent the last twelve years of his life as a fugitive. He could not be dissuaded from his mission and, to carry it out, he paid the price with his own life.

By translating the Bible, he became the father of the modern English language and left a legacy that endures to this day.

William Tyndale's bold mission is an invitation to remember the necessity and power of God's Word.

recommendations

“Few who read the Bible in English today understand the debt they owe to the martyr William Tyndale. Even among those who know the name of the origin of the modern English translation of the Bible, few are aware that Tyndale passionately defended the doctrines of justification by faith alone and salvation by grace alone. This little literary gem reveals Tyndale's efforts for the truth, his sufferings for the truth, and his love for the truth. May God use Steven Lawson's book to light the flame of that love in many others.”
— Dr. Joel R. Beeke, president and professor at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“Much more than a biography, this moving chronicle awakens the Christian heart and stokes the fire of determination to proclaim the truth with courage. Dr. Lawson's diligent work on William Tyndale should be considered essential reading for every believer, carefully unfolding the legacy of God's faithfulness in using one man, against all odds, to bring the gospel to the common tongue. .
— David Parsons, Founder of Truth Remains, California

“In the history of the Christian faith among the English-speaking peoples, it was William Tyndale's translation of the Bible that made them a people of the Book. Tyndale's life was poured out even to the point of death to achieve that goal, and every generation of believers needs to hear again the story of his life and death. And one of the best guides to its history and its lessons for our time is this new study by Steven Lawson. Highly recommended!".
— Michael AG Haykin, Professor of Church History at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kentucky
